Open Water Swimming

13 June 2024 to 31 October 2024 Canary Wharf

Open water swimming returns to Canary Wharf for the summer!

Due to popular demand, open water swimming returns to Canary Wharf for the summer. In partnership with Love Open Water, the venue is now open for residents, visitors and workers to take a dip in the beautiful clear waters of Middle Dock. Enjoy the views of the iconic One Canada Square and Newfoundland whilst swimming in our urban oasis. It is the perfect location to cool off, from now until the end of October.

This year’s roster of events caters for all swimming abilities, with visitors able to swim on the below days/ times:

  • Mondays: 16:00 – 20:00
  • Wednesdays: 12.30 - 15.00
  • Thursdays: 17:30 – 20:30
  • Fridays: 07:00 – 09:00
  • Saturdays: 13:30 – 16:30

Water testing is carried out as per EU Bathing Guidelines shows a consistent record of the highest grading possible - ‘Excellent’, across all analysis since swimming started at the site. This is due to Middle Dock being spring fed by an aquifer which filters the water through layers of Thanet sand and gravel resulting in its superb water quality and unrivalled clarity.  During the early development of Canary Wharf, a cofferdam was put in at the entrance of Middle Dock, fully closing it off from the surrounding docklands and the river Thames. It is entirely enclosed and totally untouched by any overflows or waste."

Every session is lifeguarded and can be enjoyed by competent open water swimmers over the age of 10. You can check session times and book a swim via the ACTiO app. Access to the water is from the pontoon next to Humble Grape on Mackenzie Walk. Dedicated facilities will also be available for swimmers at the base of Cubitt steps, including male and female changing rooms, toilets and a warm water rinse shower.

To swim at this spot, swimmers just need to purchase a NOWCA membership for £15 per year – granting them access to Canary Wharf as well as over 40 other safe open water locations nationwide, insurance cover for personal injury, Premium access to the NOWCA Wild app, and access to a wide range of perks. Members can also benefit from the ACTiO app which allows swimmers to book and pay online, check their swim stats, and update emergency contacts and medical information.

Open water swimming sessions at Canary Wharf cost £9.00 per swim, or you can take part in the free NOWCA Swim event that will be offered to members regularly. For those looking to build confidence or improve technique, you can also book a coaching session.

Note: All swimmers must wear brightly coloured head wear (swim cap / hat / headband) and a bright tow float in the water – regardless of ability or experience. When the water temperature is below 15°C, a cold water induction must also be completed online prior to booking. The water is expected to be below 15°C until late June.
