Quarry Bank Mill

A serene brick building, partially obscured by lush green foliage, stands alongside a stone arch bridge over a narrow waterway. The scene is quiet and picturesque, emphasizing the natural and historic elements harmoniously coexisting.
Quarry Bank Mill, National Trust

The semi working mill allows visitors to experience the very different worlds of the mill owner and workers who lived and worked side by side. Inside the mill, expect to experience the intensity of the noise and vibrations of spinning machines and looms weaving. Hear stories of the torrid lives of the mill workers and see how they live. You can tour the Apprentice House which shows you where child workers, as young as 8, lived and given food and board in exchange for their labour.

In contrast, you can explore the grandeur of the mill owner’s home, the Greg’s, and wander through the stunning picturesque gardens and woodland that rise up the banks of the river valley. They offer wonderful views over the Cheshire countryside and a nice spot to sit and have a picnic in the summer. Styal village is also close by and provides further glimpses into how the workers lived.

Styal mill is a unique and very well preserved slice of history interesting for people of all ages.
