People's History Museum

The People’s History Museum was given a whopping £12.5 million makeover back in 2010 which created a sizeable museum for Manchester and shone a spotlight on British democracy, past and future.  So how does the museum bring this broad and often complex subject to life?

We think rather well. It tells the stories of people, communities, and organisations including - trade unions, political parties, environmental activists and the National Federation of Old Age Pension Associations – through an extensive collection of trade union and political banners and sashes.  In addition, there are over 4,000 political posters and prints covering elections to peace and equality. Plus, the largest collection of political papers in the world, including the personal papers of prominent figures, such as Michael Foot and Eric Heffer.

The museum has made it easy to navigate yourself around by colour coding each section of the gallery - red for courage, green for reform, blue for loyalty, pink for peace etc.   Aside from the wealth of things to see, there’s a varied schedule of events happening each week; most are free to join or there’s a small token fee.

We think it’s a fascinating museum and one that’s definitely worth a visit.
