Elizabeth Gaskell’s House

Elizabeth Gaskell's House

The Study, Morning Room, Drawing Room, Dining Room and Elizabeth’s bedroom have all been restored to how they would have looked when she lived there in around 1857. The house has been painstakingly furnished, decorated and laid out. The furniture and fireplaces, all sourced locally, date from around 1840 when the house was built, and the light fittings have all been converted from gas to electricity.   The introductory film about Elizabeth’s life and Victorian Manchester in the morning room is a good place to start your tour before entering into the drawing room, dining room and Elizabeth’s bedroom.

Alongside the house sits a Britain in Bloom award winning garden. It’s fully accessible and there’s ample benches to sit on and enjoy the sights and sounds of a thriving urban garden. In the summer, Victorian garden games are laid out for anyone to use, and a family garden trail is available all year round. Feeling thirsty after your stroll? There’s a busy tea shop offering a range of hot and cold drinks and delicious home-baked cakes. There’s also fresh soup on those chilly Manc days.
