A major cross-artform collaboration between Clark, Manchester Collective and choreographer Melanie Lane.
A musical time warp in which classical, electronic and dance worlds collide and where sound resonates across the ages.
This spring, boundary-pushing ensemble Manchester Collective presents Refractions – a live performance where electronica, classical music and contemporary dance intertwine – in a groundbreaking collaboration with pioneering electronic artist Clark and acclaimed choreographer Melanie Lane.
Refractions will take audiences on a sonic and visual journey spanning music from across the last 1,000 years. Conceived as one continuous musical experience by creative director and violinist Rakhi Singh, the show will draw on the vast spectrum of Clark’s music – from hard-hitting techno and world-building ambient tracks to classical compositions for strings and piano.
Brand new arrangements for string orchestra, electronics and piano – performed live by Manchester Collective with Clark – will be in dialogue with medieval and Baroque masterworks, modern and contemporary classical pieces, illuminating the relationship and hidden links between different sound worlds.
Set against a backdrop of bold choreography by Melanie Lane for a trio of dancers, and dramatic, atmospheric lighting, the show will offer a fresh perspective on the interplay between different artforms. Three contrasting parts will mirror the ever-evolving dynamic of any relationship, human or musical – from the initial discovery of joy and excitement to disintegration and destruction, before waking up in a new world of celebration and ecstasy.
Suspend yourself in time and let go. Alternate realities await.
