Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre Pub, has been a beloved local haunt since the Victorian era- an oldy but a goody one might say. Though it might look like a relic of the past with its unchanged decor, this pub remains the epicenter of community life in Walthamstow. The story behind its license is a classic: when it first applied for a full license in 1890, a local MP opposed on behalf of the Bell Inn, only to be humorously thwarted when it was revealed that the Bell's landlady had been dead for a year.
Fast forward to today, Ye Olde Rose and Crown (affectionately dubbed YORaC by absolutely no one) is a beloved pub and theatre. Under new management since 2008, it boasts a refreshed, spacious main bar and an 80-seat black box studio theatre. This dual identity as both a pub and a theatre has earned it accolades, including the CAMRA East London Pub of the Year award in 2011, thanks to its well-kept ales and rich community atmosphere.
The real star of the show, however, is All Star Productions, Walthamstow’s only full-time professional theatre company, founded in 2006 by musician Aaron Clingham. Known for their musical theatre revivals, they brought London's 40th Anniversary production of GODSPELL to life in 2011, earning six Off West End Award nominations. Their acclaimed revival of Howard Goodall’s GIRLFRIENDS further cemented their reputation.
With a cabaret lounge, comedy nights, blues and jazz sessions, and even a stint of martial arts classes, Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre Pub is far more than a drinking spot. It’s a lively, eclectic space where decades-long regulars mingle with young newcomers, creating a unique blend of history and modernity.
