You'll find the Vaudeville theatre right by the Strand; and aside from its prime location, this establishment has been a stalwart of London's West End since its debut in 1870, originally designed by C.J. Phipps. It was once an unassuming billiards club that has been rebuilt twice, each reincarnation retaining whispers of its storied past. The current incarnation, boasts rare thunder drum and lightning sheets, early stage mechanisms that continue to enchant audiences with their historic mystique.
From its early days, the Vaudeville has been appraised for its diverse productions. Notable shows include the percussive marvel Stomp!, the hilariously dark Ladykillers, political farce The Duck House, and Oscar Wilde's timeless The Importance of Being Earnest. More recent hits include the empowering Emilia and the mischievously magical Magic Goes Wrong. And who could forget the phenomenal rise of the musical SIX, which has made the Vaudeville its London home, electrifying audiences with the tale of Henry VIII's wives reimagined as pop icons.
In 2003, the theatre's ownership passed to Max Weitzenhoffer, and in 2005, it became part of the Nimax Theatres family. This change brought a renewed vibrancy to the venue, ensuring its continued relevance in the ever-evolving theatrical landscape.
The Vaudeville’s seating is as thoughtfully designed as it's productions. The auditorium features three levels: Stalls, Dress Circle, and Grand Circle. The Stalls offer excellent sight-lines with gentle raking, while the Dress Circle provides an intimate view of the stage, making you feel close to the action. The Grand Circle, though a bit distant, still ensures unobstructed views.
