When it comes to immersive fringe theatre and musicals, The Union Theatre has your back. This venue was originally a disused paper warehouse near Southwark station, metamorphosed into a lively theatre space where musicals take centre stage. The original Union Theatre, known for its endearingly rough-around-the-edges charm and occasional train rumbles, became a sanctuary for light operas, obscure 20th-century musicals, and inventive new productions that diverge from the West End mainstream.
In 2016, facing eviction due to Network Rail's redevelopment plans, the theatre's story took a dramatic turn. A fervent campaign ensured its survival, allowing the Union Theatre to relocate just across the street to another railway arch, preserving its unique essence. The new location brought significant enhancements: a 75-seat auditorium with tiered seating, a lively bar and café, and—crucially—greatly improved restroom facilities.
The Union Theatre serves as more than just a performance space; it’s a springboard for musical theatre talent, many of whom have gone on to make their mark in the West End. Among its illustrious alumni is choreographer Drew McOnie. The theatre also established a Youth Theatre, providing exceptional training for aspiring young performers under 18.
Within walking distance of Waterloo and Blackfriars, the Union Theatre is perfectly situated for both locals and visitors. This celebrated venue, once lauded as the Best Up-and-Coming Theatre, continues to captivate audiences with its diverse musical productions.
