The Unicorn Theatre stands as the UK’s premier professional theatre for young audiences, enchanting children for over 70 years. Founded in 1947 by the visionary Caryl Jenner, this theatre started its journey as a mobile theatre, bringing performances to children in remote villages across the UK. By 1962, the Unicorn had found a more permanent home at the Arts Theatre in the West End, performing matinees for children and evening shows for adults to make ends meet.
Caryl’s dream of a dedicated children's theatre was posthumously realized in 2005 with the opening of a purpose-built venue designed by Keith Williams, complete with two theatres, an education studio, and a rehearsal space. Officially inaugurated by the late Lord Attenborough and children from Tower Bridge Primary School, this architectural gem quickly became a cornerstone of London’s cultural landscape.
Today, The Unicorn Theatre dazzles around 65,000 families and schools annually with a vibrant mix of new shows and classic adaptations, all tailored to inspire, challenge, and entertain young minds. From its 290-seat main theatre to the more intimate 100-seat studio, the Unicorn offers a diverse programme that includes everything from workshops to innovative digital theatre experiences under its Unicorn Online initiative.
Committed to inclusivity and accessibility, the theatre offers subsidies to ensure all children, regardless of background, can experience the joy of theatre. The Unicorn actively collaborates with schools and community groups across London, ensuring that the voices of young people help shape its productions.
