The Drayton Arms Pub & Theatre

A sign reading Drayton Arms Pub, Kitchen & Theatre hangs from an ornate bracket on the exterior of a historic brick building under a blue sky.
The Drayton Pub Theatre

You'll find the Drayton Arms Theatre right above the quaint 19th-century pub in South Kensington; boasting a quirky history that’s as vibrant as its performances. Originally erected in 1860 and rebuilt in 1891, this Grade II listed building has seen its fair share of transformations. What began as a function room eventually found itself thrust into theatrical glory post-World War II, doubling as a rehearsal space for the emerging talents of BBC TV.

Fast forward to 1985, when the space took on a new life as a rehearsal studio for the prestigious Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. The brainchild of Hilary Wood and Newton Jones, this transformation paved the way for the studio’s evolution into a full-fledged theatre. Renamed The Drayton Studio, it became a creative hub for budding actors and a stage for twelve annual performances.

After a brief hiatus, the theatre reemerged in late 2010 with a renewed vigor. Extensive renovations transformed it into a professional fringe venue, officially reopening as The Drayton Arms Theatre in April 2011. Today, this intimate 51-seat black box theatre continues to be a hotspot for inventive new productions, showcasing everything from daring new writing to beloved musicals and even the occasional pantomime.

Beyond its theatrical charm, The Drayton Arms pub below exudes a cozy, traditional atmosphere adorned with wood paneling, etched glass, and elegant chandeliers. Patrons can enjoy a range of British classics and a well-stocked bar featuring craft beers, wines, and artisanal spirits.
