The Sylvia Young Theatre School, is amongst the best in the country for creating theatrical stars. Founded in 1972 by the indomitable Sylvia Young OBE, the school began with humble part-time classes in East London before blossoming into a full-time institution on Drury Lane in 1981. Its relentless pursuit of excellence soon necessitated a move to a former 1880s church school in Marylebone.
In 2010, the school made yet another move, this time to its current iconic home in Nutford Place, Westminster—a stunning conversion of a 19th-century church. Here, modernity meets tradition with ten state-of-the-art studios equipped with everything a budding performer could dream of: from sprung floors to recording studios, ensuring each student can perfect their dance routines, refine their vocal prowess, and immerse themselves in dramatic roles without missing a beat.
Dubbed the "Eton for the Pop Idol generation," Sylvia Young Theatre School has garnered fame not only for its star-studded alumni—Amy Winehouse, Emma Bunton, and Rita Ora, to name a few—but also for its unique approach to education. Balancing high academic standards with intensive training in the performing arts, the school offers a curriculum that blends traditional subjects with specialised vocational courses, setting a stage for success in both theatre and beyond.
With a selective audition process that rivals the intensity of any West End performance, Sylvia Young Theatre School seeks out raw talent and nurtures it into greatness. Despite its exclusive reputation, the school remains a beacon of inclusivity, welcoming students of all backgrounds and beliefs into its vibrant community. Beyond academics and arts, Sylvia Young instills values of self-esteem, responsibility, and tolerance, fostering an environment where each student can thrive.
