Shaftesbury Theatre

The Shaftesbury Theatre originally opened in 1911 as the New Prince's Theatre, this architectural gem has weathered the tides of time, transforming from its melodramatic roots to become a hub for musicals, comedies, and groundbreaking productions.

Designed by Bertie Crewe for brothers Frederick and Walter Melville, the theatre debuted with "The Three Musketeers" on Boxing Day, marking the beginning of a legacy that has seen it host everything from Shakespeare to Gilbert & Sullivan operas. Renamed the Shaftesbury Theatre in 1963, it has survived near-demolition threats and even a gas explosion in 1929, thanks to the fervent protests of actors and industry figures, including a defiant street performance of "Hair" during its heyday in the late 1960s.

Speaking of "Hair," the theatre made history when it premiered the controversial musical just a day after the abolition of theatre censorship in 1968, setting the stage for an era of bold experimentation. Throughout the decades, it has continued to push boundaries, embracing both the classics and modern hits alike. From Fred and Adele Astaire gracing its stage in the 1920s to Anthony Hopkins and Chita Rivera in later years, the Shaftesbury has hosted many stars, each contributing to its illustrious history.

In recent times, the theatre has undergone extensive renovations, enhancing its facilities to meet contemporary standards while preserving its historic charm. Today, it welcomes audiences with state-of-the-art amenities, including improved accessibility and a spectacular fly tower. As the heart of London's theatre district, the Shaftesbury Theatre remains dedicated to nurturing emerging talent and presenting productions that captivate and inspire.
