A stone building with arched windows and a large, pointed entrance houses the Putney Arts Theatre. A banner above the entrance advertises a production of West Side Story. A black van and a white truck are parked in front, along with some greenery.

You'll find Putney Arts Theatre in a kitsch 1860-built Old Union Church, which boasts architectural siblings like the Reform Club and Nelson’s Column, this theatre has been around since 1968. The London County Council saved it from demolition, and Group 64 Youth Theatre transformed it into a stage for the imagination.

Founded by Maurice Copus, a visionary teacher, Group 64 began as an after-school club in 1959. By 1968, thanks to the persuasive efforts of Eleanor Goodrich and support from local officials, the group secured the old church, turning it into a lively theatre under the watchful eyes of patrons like Sir John Mills. The 1970s saw expansions, with a 150-seat main auditorium and a 50-seat studio, fostering a dynamic range of productions. Despite some ups and downs, the theatre community's spirit never waned.

The 1990s brought significant refurbishments, including a complete rebuild under Perry Kitchen's leadership. A generous legacy and a lottery award allowed for essential repairs and the purchase of the freehold, securing the theatre's future. The millennium marked a new era with the renaming to Putney Arts Theatre, reflecting its broadening scope as a community arts venue.

Putney Arts Theatre now hosts a mix of bold, adventurous, and occasionally silly productions, driven by the creativity of Putney Theatre Company and Group 64 Youth Theatre. It's a bustling hive of theatrical activity, with over 300 children attending weekly classes and numerous community groups calling it home. From refurbishing the bar to installing state-of-the-art lighting, the theatre continuously evolves, much like the dynamic performances it showcases.
