Matilda the Musical is the story of a young girl who learns to use her remarkable, supernatural talents to find the loving family she deserves. Matilda's parents dislike their daughter, who'd much rather read a book than watch television all day. Surpassing the normal intelligence of the other schoolchildren, Matilda is championed at school by Miss Honey, who endeavours to help her on her journey. Unfortunately, the evil Miss Trunchbull is set on making the children’s lives a misery. What Trunchbull does not realise is that Matilda’s immense intelligence and magical powers can be used to rid the school of the terrible tyrant!
Featuring fan favourite songs such as “Loud”, “Telly!”, “The Smell of Rebellion”, “Naughty”, “Quiet”, “Bruce” and “Revolting Children” amongst many others, adds just the right mix of nostalgia and humour that resonates so well with the original story. Matilda is the perfect example of children's theatre in London that adults will love too, boasting mischief, mayhem and a huge heart.
The current London cast includes Kieran Hill as Miss Trunchbull, who shines as the champion villain, bringing chills to adults and terrifying many of the children in the audience, to their obvious delight. The whole cast is brilliant, so talented with phenomenal choreography and dancing skills, lunch tables that are dramatically pulled away so that the students can leap, pirouette, and stomp about really keeps the the energy going throughout. Special highlights include the newt incident and Amanda Thripps unexpected launch via pigtail hammer throw, an absolute classic!
Matilda the Musical has touched millions of theatre goers and while it’s amazing when it’s bright and cheerful, it’s even better when it’s deliciously wicked and nasty. This musical adventure really is one truly irresistible treat for the whole family to enjoy.
Matilda the Musical is based on the beloved story by the incomparable Roald Dahl, with a book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by composer lyricist Tim Minchin and is currently at the Cambridge Theatre, London until May 2026.
