Since first opening in London’s West End, and currently showing at the Novello Theatre, the exhilarating smash-hit Mama Mia has become a global phenomenon, thrilling over 70 million people worldwide. Its easy to to see why as Its hard not to fall in love with the irresistibly funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads on a Greek island, all unfolding to the magic of ABBA's timeless songs.

The story is based around the bright and loving Sophie who lives with her mother Donna Sheridan on the idyllic islands of Greece, and she has a dream - to have her father walk her down the aisle. Only…Sophie doesn’t know who her father is. One fateful day when she stumbles upon her mother’s old diaries, she finds three men's names scribbled amongst hearts - Harry, Bill and Sam. Sophie decides that it’s time to take matters into her own hands.

She doesn’t know which old flame to invite to her wedding, so she invites them all. When the three men dock up on the island, things take an interesting turn, and Sophie tries everything in her power to figure out the ultimate secret - which one of them is her father?

A huge part of the enjoyment of seeing Mamma Mia on stage has to be the music of Abba and the collective recognition by the audience, seen by the huge smiles on their faces, of all the familiar songs such as Money, Money, Money, Dancing Queen, and Thank You for the Music. It’s an instant dopamine rush.

Leading the current Mamma Mia London cast is Mazz Murray, who brings her roof-raising vocals to the proudly independent Donna, especially during her knockout break-up song The Winner Takes It All, an absolute shot of pure sunshine! A special mention must also go to Izi Maxwell who gives a powerful performance as Sophie. The ensemble are also pretty impressive, with high-energy and perfect dancing – flippers and all!

Mamma Mia! might not be for everyone with the glittery costumes, euro-pop disco ballads and camp dance routines, however it is precisely this that creates an almost time-capsule piece which evokes a wonderful sense of nostalgia for many an audience member. It is almost guaranteed that by the end of the show, encores and all, almost every single audience member will be on their feet, singing and dancing to the music, experiencing the sheer joy of this feel good production.
