Chickenshed Theatre

A large, vibrant stage performance features numerous people in eclectic costumes. Performers are dancing energetically under bright blue and white stage lights. The background includes abstract geometric shapes and patterns, adding to the lively and dynamic atmosphere.

Founded in 1974 by the dynamic duo of teacher Mary Ward and composer Jo Collins, Chickenshed Theatre began its remarkable journey in a disused chicken shed in Cockfosters. Yes, you read that right—a chicken shed! With a vision of creating a truly inclusive theatre where everyone, regardless of their background or ability, could perform and create, Mary and Jo's dream took flight in the most unexpected of places.

The 1980s marked a pivotal moment when Chickenshed embraced true inclusion. Inspired by a young boy with cerebral palsy who participated in one of their productions, the company resolved to ensure everyone could be part of their theatrical family. This ethos of inclusion attracted high-profile supporters like Dame Judi Dench and Princess Diana, whose passion for Chickenshed’s mission brought it into the limelight.

Chickenshed’s journey from a humble chicken shed to a purpose-built theatre in Southgate in 1994 is a testament to its founders' dedication and the community’s support. The new venue, with its Rayne Theatre seating 300, a smaller Studio Theatre, an Amphitheatre, and a buzzing bar/restaurant, became a beacon of inclusive arts.

The 1990s also saw Chickenshed expanding its horizons, embarking on national tours and introducing educational courses. By 1997, they were offering BTECs, and soon they added Foundation Degrees and full Bachelor of Arts Degrees. Their innovative approach to performing arts education brought together young people from all walks of life, fostering creativity and teamwork.

In the 21st century, Chickenshed’s influence grew globally. ShedLink, established in 2000, helped create 19 'Sheds' worldwide, including in Finland and New York. Their ethos of inclusion and creativity crossed borders, making a difference on a global scale.

Chickenshed’s impact was amplified when they won the Golden Buzzer on Britain's Got Talent in 2023, bringing their message of inclusion to millions. With patrons like Judi Dench and alumni such as Jamie Demetriou, Chickenshed continues to change lives and redefine theatre, proving that with a little creativity and a lot of heart, a chicken shed can indeed change the world.
