Bridewell Theatre

A theater interior with empty tiered seating facing the stage. The seats are arranged in rows, divided into three sections by two staircases. Overhead, several stage lights shine down. The surrounding walls are painted dark blue, and the area is well-lit.
Bridewell Theatre

The Bridewell Theatre is a quirky spot that breathes life into its Victorian roots. Originally the City of London's first swimming pool, this off-West End venue now showcases a diverse array of performances, from fringe theatre to magical cabaret shows. Imagine watching a gripping drama or a lively musical while perched above a hidden tiled pool, accessible through a floor hatch—talk about a dramatic twist!

Opened in 1994, this place went from derelict pool to theatrical fringe hotspot. The Victorian glass lantern roof, complete with a viewing gallery and preserved changing rooms, adds a surreal touch to its unique charm. While the space usually boasts blackout blinds, natural daylight filters through the glass roof, lending an atmospheric glow to daytime events. Whether you’re enjoying a bite-sized Lunchbox performance or a full-scale opera, the Bridewell’s ambiance is unmatched.

The theatre’s adaptability is part of its allure. With a seating capacity of 134 and standing room for 200, it can morph into an intimate ballroom, a magical cabaret venue, or even a high-tech conference space. Equipped with a full lighting rig, AV facilities, WiFi, and climate control, it’s as versatile as it is enchanting.

In 2012, the Bridewell found its theatrical soulmate in Sedos, the Stock Exchange Operatic and Dramatic Society, cementing its reputation as a premier amateur dramatics venue. From hosting Stephen Sondheim’s UK debut of "Saturday Night" in 1997 to fending off closure in 2004 with the help of loyal supporters, the Bridewell’s story is one of resilience and reinvention.

Today, this historic venue, part of the St Bride Foundation, continues to captivate audiences with its eclectic programming.
