Bloomsbury Theatre

The Bloomsbury theatre first opened its doors in 1968 as the Central Collegiate Building Auditorium and eventually rebranded in 1982 to reflect its surroundings. Since then, the theatre has since been the stage for a plethora of performances, ranging from cutting-edge drama to laugh-out-loud comedy. As part of University College London, the theatre not only showcases professional talent but also nurtures the next generation of performers by working closely with students and researchers.

Seating a comfortable 541 people, the Bloomsbury Theatre ensures every guest has a great view, whether they’re watching a daring new play, an electrifying dance performance, or a high-profile comedy act. For more intimate shows, the Bloomsbury Studio, with its flexible seating for up to 70 people, offers a cozy yet dynamic space.

The theatre’s impressive alumni list reads like a who’s who of the entertainment world. UCL’s own Ricky Gervais has graced the stage, as has Adele, serenading audiences before she became a global sensation. Even Christopher Nolan, the visionary director behind films like "Inception" and "The Dark Knight," honed his craft here as part of UCL’s Film Society.

Following a major renovation completed in 2019, the Bloomsbury Theatre boasts a modern auditorium with luxurious seating and state-of-the-art facilities. Its distinctive logo, designed by famed cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, still welcomes visitors, embodying the theatre’s rich history and commitment to creativity.

From legendary performances by Jo Brand and the percussive magic of Stomp to groundbreaking student productions, the Bloomsbury Theatre continues to be a creative space of artistic innovation and a beloved fixture of London’s cultural landscape.
