Escape is written and directed by Masha Maroutitch (JMK Finalist, RSC), starring Erika Sviderskyte (The Royal Mob, Sky TV). A project made with a shoestring budget of £300, the only way possible as working class film-makers. It’s currently on the Festival Circuit and has been recently awarded the Tarkovsky Grant by the London Super Short Film Festival.
The film is about a young woman discovers a way to escape her mundane reality through dance.
Director’s Statement I was wandering around my local park and stumbled across a young woman in a tracksuit rehearsing a ballet routine with a cigarette in her mouth. The sun backlit her making her ethereal. I was entranced. It was one of those images that you come across in life that feel extraordinary. I wanted to try and capture that image within this film, to bring it to life.
I’ve always been interested in the visual language that can be created through camera movement. To heighten the stagnation of Saskia’s reality I wanted the camera to be held in static frames only to move as she starts to escape from reality either through music or movement, till it eventually transcends into a duet between the camera and dancer. My hope is that by watching this film the viewer is for a brief moment able to be suspended from reality. To escape.
Starring Erika Sviderskyte, an actress and dancer. She recently appeared in ‘The Royal Mob’ (Sky TV), ‘Stargazer’ (Wild Fang Films), ‘Eleven’ (NFTS). Commercials include: Bumble; Vivident. Represented by Simon & How Associates.
