Incels, Ideology and Internet Chaos, The Last Incel brings satire to stage this May.
After a critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2024, where it was shortlisted for the Popcorn x BBC New Writing Award, writer and director Jamie Sykes is bringing his dark satirical show, The Last Incel, to London’s Pleasance Theatre this May. With discussions growing across all forms of media about ‘incel culture’, more comments are being made about the toxic world perpetuated largely by radicalised and isolated men online. Blending the Irish humour and dance with empathy and accountability, The Last Incel is a uniquely Irish take on a universal issue.
The Last Incel is centred around the life of a young man, known online as “Cuckboy”, and his fellow incels “Ghost”, “Crusher” and “Einstain”. Following a typical day in the lives of this chronically online community of toxic men, the audience observe the ideologies of the group being challenged after one of the members sleeps with a woman. The woman in question is a journalist called Margaret, a voice of reason who must interrogate this online world and finally confront her own history with toxic men.
Set in an online meeting, the show emphasises the loneliness of the men through unique and abstract digital staging; each character holds a frame to echo a chat window. A show which leans into the emerging form of alternative comedy, The Last Incel explores this darker subject, using satire to make it more palatable to the public.
By translating the online, digital world into living and breathing actors on a stage, The Last Incel humanises the very real stories at its core and raises conversations surrounding the depiction of masculinity within social media and pop culture.
