UK disco extraordinaire Norman Jay MBE brings a big one for Brixton Jamm. Funk, soul, and disco classics, mixed on vinyl, for half the waking day. What a treat.
It seems to be disco season in London for New Years. Typically an evening so packed with raves and dance music is now opening up for some soul. And for that we are ever grateful. Raves have their place, sure, but for us it's all about those good, wholesome disco vibes.
And has anyone done more for UK disco in the past three decades than Norman Jay MBE?
Norman Jay’s legacy in British dance music is unmatched. A pioneer of Black British Dance music, he became known as the first DJ to play funk and disco at Notting Hill Carnival. His credentials stretch back to when KISS FM was pirate, where on air he coined the term ‘rare groove’, referring to funk, soul, and disco tracks left mostly obscure.
For his efforts in pushing dance music and culture forward, he became the first ever DJ to be awarded an MBE. Quite the repertoire for a man who has never had a studio album.
Now, for NYE, he takes to the brilliant Brixton Jamm, promising a carefree eve of killer classics and masterful blends. Jamm can sometimes be a shiesty venue, quite pushy and busy, so be smart, keep to your space and look out for your peoples. Be a good club friend x
