Mount Kimbie present ‘Tunnelvision’ - Phonox Residency

10 January 2025 to 31 January 2025 Phonox

Electronic wizards turned indie pop-rock darlings, the shapeshifting Mount Kimbie take over Brixton's Phonox for four Friday's in January, each of them more genre-blending than the last.

Changing with the times almost as much as they changed them themselves, London-based electronic group Mount Kimbie have spent the last fifteen years shapeshifting, from bedroom-oriented dubstep to club-oriented bedroom pop, striking trends in numerous genres as they went.

Few artists are capable of making a track like ‘Carbonated’ and ‘Blue Train Lines’, mastering both distant fields of experimental dub and Jamie T-style indie rock, featuring King Krule. Going further in the indie direction on last years The Sunset Violent, they feel much more comfortable in the genre while also zapping their past sounds into the present.

So it's a good thing they're doing a residency then, as I have no clear idea from what era of their catalogue they'll be performing from. Are we to expect a straight-up gig? Guitars, solos, pedals, idle dancing, and booming vocals from their guest features? Well, since it's at Phonox, probably not. I'm expecting four fridays of DJ sets, especially as they're bringing in artists like D. Tiffany, Courtesy, and Jay Duncan, all versed in the art of a club banger, the latter being the most similar to early-era Mount Kimbie as I have found this decade.

But still, new-era Mount Kimbie fans can expect inclusions and reworks of their newer material, as well as having four separate opportunities to see the artists at work in their initial natural habitat: a sweaty dancefloor with bleeding massive speakers.
