Midland - at Tate Modern

26 October 2024 Tate Modern

A dance for the more sophisticated, acclaimed British producer and DJ Midland takes over the hall at the Tate Modern for a brief night to remember.

The Tate Modern has been making more and more forays into late night music as of recent. For one, this summer has seen the growth in popularity of their Late at the Tate series, the most recent one curated by Little Simz. The queue to get in was so long it went out into the street, and they locked it off two hours before closing, way earlier than expected.

Realising the audience is there, the great minds at Tate did the right thing by booking Midland, one of the UK's most beloved dance musicians. He always stands tall on a line-up, with dance fans giving him priority for his selection of rare grooves, crowd responsiveness, and stamina on the decks. His own work is strong enough to rely on as a performer ('Final Credits' really is that tune), but the strength of his mixes propel him to stratospheric levels.

While tickets come at a bit of a premium, this is (up to now) a rare chance to see a top-of-the-line dance act at London's most innovative artistic institution. The acoustics of the grand hall may be a struggle to nail down, but once perfected, the sound has an almost Church-like quality, to which Midland will exploit to his funky ends.
