A group exhibition celebrating the power of fine lines, through painting, sculpture, textiles, and mixed media.
Running from 17 October to 2 November 2024, the exhibition features works by acclaimed artists Chowwai Cheung, Jessica Cooper, Gary Betts, as well as guest artists Cicely Creswell and Deniz Kurdak.
The exhibition brings together a diverse group of artists, where each explores the infinite possibilities that emerge from the disciplined use of lines in their work. In this exhibition, each artist’s mastery of line manifests through distinct mediums—painting, sculpture, textiles, and mixed media—offering a dynamic exploration of form, surface, and movement.
FEATURED ARTISTS:
Chowwai Cheung’s geometric landscapes are deeply influenced by the natural rock formations of Devon and Dorset. Her paintings, created using acrylic and oil stick on wood panel, feature layered, hard-edged shapes that capture the spatial boundaries between land and form. Each piece offers a unique tension between depth and surface, through the precise combinations of lines, inviting viewers into the intricacies of her landscapes.
Known for her minimalist approach, Jessica Cooper focuses on the negative space within a canvas allowing her subjects the ‘space to breathe’. Her still life paintings, resembling a visual Haiku, use a few precise lines and soft colour fields to imbue everyday objects with a profound meaning and calm. Each piece given thoughtfully chosen titles, adding a deeper sense of contemplation. Cooper’s works have been widely exhibited across Cornwall and the UK, and she continues to be celebrated for her masterful use of line and space.
Working from his barge studio on the River Thames, Gary Betts combines resin clay sculptures with permanent ink pen illustrations to create fantastical human-animal hybrids. His intricate motifs often convey personal memories and universal narratives with a sense of humour and emotional depth therefore each character has a unique whimsical, yet thought-provoking narrative.
Cicely Creswell’s detailed ink drawings explore narratives of time and human connection. Her work invites slow observation, with each piece revealing nuanced details through flattened and distorted perspectives, reminiscent of manuscripts and historical texts. Cicely’s artwork creates a dialogue between the past and present, capturing the viewer’s attention through her storytelling approach to line.
Deniz Kurdak’s textile art interlaces emotional repair, memory and identity with delicate, fine lines stitched into fabric. Drawing on her background in theatre and costume design, Deniz reimagines traditional craft techniques, layering personal narratives into her works. Her practice of cutting, sewing, and weaving becomes a metaphor for reconstruction, blending the resilience of fabric with the fragility of porcelain motifs.
