A vivid exploration of the complexities of love and addiction.
This production marks the stage adaptation debut of Luke Davies' novel Candy: A Novel of Love and Addiction, which was first adapted for the screen in 2006 starring Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish
During a Sydney summer in the 1980's, a beautiful young woman Candy, meets Dan, a charismatic junkie. Their love blossoms quickly, and in their desire to share everything, Candy tries heroin. This marks the beginning of their descent, as heroin becomes a constant and demanding presence in their relationship.
Based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Luke Davies, Neil Armfield’s film adaptation of Candy captivated audiences with its raw portrayal of love and addiction, earning it a beloved status as a cult classic and featuring one of Heath Ledger’s most acclaimed performances.
Adapting Writer and Director Kate Elliot commented, “ Candy particularly appeals to me because it explores complex relationships and the profound impact of addiction. Adapting Candy allows me to delve into these intense themes and present them in a way that will engage and move the audience, while also providing a fresh perspective on the novel and film”.
Witnessing Candy and Dan's love story unfold on stage serves as a powerful tool for audiences to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of addiction.
