The Hemingway - Hackney

Regularly referred to by local punters as one of the best Sunday roasts in the city, The Hemingway appeals for its no-nonsense, old-school approach to pub décor and menu design, preferring the dimly-lit sticky tables to the tarted-up, corporate-friendly drinkery.

All dishes made to order from their open plan kitchen, all ingredients are sourced from the best suppliers, and their menu contains classic, crowd-pleasing British dishes. Nothing pretentious going on at the Hemingway, as is so common now in East London's pub scene.

Their daily menu is on the more speciality end compared to other 'no-nonsense' pubs, as you'd struggle to find in an estate pub a dish of pan-fried sea bream or any form of tagliatelle. However, their beef wellington looks beyond unreal (if you can hack the worthwhile 40-min wait time).

As said clearly on their website, "we are a pub, not a cocktail bar". Don't go expecting to be able to order a pina colada. It stops at Aperol Spritz (and they seem to make a good Bloody Mary too). Indeed, this is where taps run the show.

For their Sunday roasts you have a choice of Salt marsh lamb rump, Kilravock pork belly, Corn fed chicken, Scottish beef fillet, or Veggie roast. Any of these, of course, come complete with all the trimmings in classical style.

If you're looking for the more stripped-back, traditional roast experience, the Hemingway is your spot.
