This 2.5-hectare public park is a central part of Bloomsbury, an area of central London long associated with learning and academia. The University of London's central library Senate House looms large over the east side of the park, and the universities UCL and SOAS are within walking distance - as is the British Museum. On the west side of the park is the grand Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel, and it's beautiful terracotta facade provides a stimulating view above the park itself.

Russell Square still has its original layout as planned by Sir Humphrey Repton; a circular path lines the perimeter with shrubberies at its corners, and two curving bow-shaped paths cross the garden to meet at the park's paved centre. A 2002 refurbishment added a gushing ground-level fountain, and parents often sit on the surrounding benches to keep a watchful eye on their children playing in the water.

In the northwest corner of the park sits the stylish family-run Italian Caffè Tropea, which serves light bites and large meals with drinks from coffee and tea to beer and wine.
