Peckham Rye Park, in the vibrant borough of Southwark, is a beautiful 113-acre green space that offers a mix of landscaped gardens, open grasslands, and recreational facilities. Originally established in 1894, the park is divided into two main areas: Peckham Rye Common and Peckham Rye Park. In the park, the historic Sexby Garden is a beautiful ornamental garden covering just over an acre, filled with roses and herbaceous plants. It was here that the visionary poet William Blake saw an oak “filled with angels, bright angelic wings bespangling every bough like stars” (The Guardian.com). A short walk away from here there is also a beautiful ornate Japanese garden, and The Victorian arboretum is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts, offering a diverse collection of trees and plants.
Visitors to Peckham Rye Park can enjoy a variety of activities. Families will appreciate the well-equipped children’s playground and the adventure playground, as well as the Peckham Rye Duck Pond. There are several picturesque walking paths, perfect for leisurely strolls or jogging, and pensive walkers can follow the River Peck from Homstead Road to the Oval Garden.
For sports ethusiasts there are football pitches, tennis courts, a bowls green and a large cricket square, as well as a small skate park and outdoor gym areas. Additional amenities include public restrooms, a charming café near the lake called The Round, and plenty of space for picnics. There is also a bandstand in Peckham Rye Common for community events, with several taking place throughout the year.
Note: While Peckham Rye Common is open all hours of the day, Peckham Rye Park is usually closed by sunset/dusk.
