The Princess of Shoreditch

Just on the Shoreditch/City border, tucked behind the Kingsland Road, in what would be considered by many to be the trendy capital of London, it’s a mighty challenge for any pub to stand out from the hoard. The Princess of Shoreditch doesn’t only stand out, but stands far above any in the area, for its 2 AA Rosettes weren’t earned for nothing.

Upcycled wooden chairs and craft beers aside, The Princess provides a drinking and dining experience that would fill tables even if it were far outside East London. A glossy, airy, and sleek interior, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better example of an elevated pub experience. Wooden floors, a seemingly infinite wine storage behind the bar that climbs to the ceiling, ornate frames, new-age chandeliers, which, despite some hipster interior design clues, make you feel like you’re in a swanky pub-themed restaurant.

And of course while there are worse places to get boozed, it’s their menu which makes The Princess of Shoreditch worth its weight in gold. Working with the best local butchers, growers, grocers, and fishermen in the country, outcompeting other for the finest of the fine ingredients, they naturally emphasise a seasonal menu. More than just an ecologically-conscious trend, seasonal menu’s ensure the highest quality of particular ingredients, maximising freshness and reducing travel time for imports.

Scorched Cornish mackerel, steak tartare, coal smoked aubergine, spanakopita, Iberico pork chop, Daphne’s Welsh lamb define their a la carte menu, and their set lunch will have you ponder over choosing between the roasted hake and braised beef chuck. For some, these options will be blown out the water by their famous Sunday roasts. Yorkshire Dales sirloin of beef (with a delicious horseradish cream), Free-range chicken, Plantation pork loin, and walnut and apricot nut roast for the veggies, and all properly garnished, this is where British food hit maximum class.

If you're not bothered about the food, then the downstairs will always welcome you to a night of high-class boozing, complete with a drinks menu of elephantine proportions, and tasty craft beers sold at the going rate of pints in East London these days. All round, The Princess of Shoreditch is one of many jewels in the crown of British Gastropub experiences.
