Encounter ghosts, graves and secret gardens in Brighton's most Haunted House when it opens its doors for a special day on 30 October.
Welcome to Preston Manor & Gardens: 30 October 2024; 10:30 am to 4:30 pm
Brighton’s Edwardian Manor house opens its doors on this special day for a chance to explore from grandeur to garret, to gardens and ghosts. Museum experts will be on site to answer all your questions about the previous occupants and illustrious visitors.
First built in the year 1250, the manor has undergone numerous changes over the years, but many of the evil spirits live on. It was first built as the manor house of Preston, formerly its own village before being engulfed by Brighton, and has housed countless upper class families over the generations.
The manor is known for its beautiful walled garden which is deemed a 'Garden of Historic Interest' and contains a pet cemetery with the remains of four cats and 16 dogs. However, the manor is now most well-known for its history of hauntings, including a nun and a floating hand!
The nun was often called The White Lady and is believed to have first been mentioned more than 500 years ago. Other spirits seen in the manor are two men fighting on the staircase. But, more hauntingly, one daughter of the former Lord of the Manor reported a particularly "evil" presence that lurked within the bedrooms. However the most surprising haunting includes a floating hand which several people have reported seeing. Various other sightings include that of a woman dressed in grey, who was seen several times over the 20th century, alongside countless reports of strange noises or objects being moved.
The manor house has even featured on the TV show, Most Haunted, with the crew experiencing a wild night full of paranormal experience.
