It’s January and time to burn off some of those Christmas pounds. Get those joggers on and lace up your trainers. Might be a good idea to put an extra layer on as well! Run our selected routes and you’ll be on your way to a fit, trim New Year new you in no time.
Along the Front
It’s Brighton: of course you should be down at the seaside! Go jogging from the Marina along the front and feel the salty breeze streaming through your (sweaty) hair. Upsides of this route: it’s a straight line. You can run as far as you like, or as short as you like. Or even build up day-on-day. Downsides: it can be a tad crowded. You’ll have to be nimble on those toes to avoid the tourists and the seagulls. It’s a great, flat route for those still finding their fitness feet.
For those looking to push themselves, try the circular route out from the Marina through the ‘Deans’. Jog along the seaside A259 until you hit Rottingdean, then head north through Ovingdean and up to Woodingdean. Follow Warren Road round to Wilson Avenue and back to the Marina. It’s a long course – close to 7 miles – but those daring enough to stay the distance will be rewarded with beautiful vistas back over east Brighton. There are some hilly moments too, but it’s no pain, no gain in this business.
Wild Park to the north of Brighton offers plenty of runs amid some welcome greenery. There are lots of potential routes in and around this peaceful hillside, and you can go off-road through the fields if you’re not averse to a bit of mud. Start at Hollingbury Park, a little to the south of the slope, before heading up Ditchlings Road. Turn right into Wild Park and skirt the edge of Hollingbury Park Golf Course back into Brighton. A tidy 4 miles with a bit of incline to get that heart pumping.
Heading to the west of Brighton, St. HelensPark is a quaint local retreat with some nice open space. To the north of the park is St. Helens Church, an 11th century stone chapel you can admire as you trot by. St Helen’s isn’t the biggest – going round the exterior of the park is only a mile and a half – so you may need a few laps if you want to really get sweating. Alternatively you could head off into the pathways in between West Hove Golf Club and get some practice dodging golf balls.
We couldn’t let you go without finding something to really test you. Step up the aptly named Devil’s Dyke Road. This country lane leads you out into the rolling slopes surrounding Brighton. Power the 2-3 miles uphill to Devil’s Dyke viewpoint and take a quick second to admire the vista. No stopping though: turn left and loop back round to Foredown Road back into Brighton for a neat 8-9 mile circle. It’s a testing route and might need a little building up to. You may not look pretty at the end, but the scenery can supply the beauty.
