You & Meow Cafe, Bristol

16 April 2017 | Amy-Lee Haynes

The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here: Bristol has opened its first cat café!

Originating in Taiwan and Japan, the cat café phenomenon has blossomed over the past few years, providing the population with a sanctuary from the stress of everyday life and a place to pet and play with some super cute kitties who love the fuss and attention.

Located in the heart of Bristol on Denmark Street, You & Meow opened its doors in early 2017 and is home to up to eight cats. The café takes inspiration from the origins of the cat café concept with Japanese style décor and a zen area with an on the floor seating area in addition to conventional café seating. From the moment you arrive you can play with the furry residents with the various toys provided, from tunnels and towers, to feather sticks and things to chase. They are all very friendly and won’t hesitate to stroll over to you for a fuss or to try and steal your cake. Each cat wears a collar to indicate its personality: whether it is a more energetic feline or if they are timid and you should therefore treat them calmly and with care. Given that the café receives lots of visitors, you should be sure to follow the rules which are there to ensure that the cats do not get distressed and to provide a constantly in a calm and relaxed environment.

The café asks their visitors to book a one hour session so you are sure to spend plenty of time with the cats, leaving you feeling relaxed and wanting to get your own furry friend. If you want to enjoy a sweet treat and a drink, there is plenty to choose from. Whilst they do not serve hot food, there is a large selection of yummy cakes that you are sure to enjoy, just make sure that those kitties keep theirs paws off. Whilst you sip on your tea and munch on a slice of lemon cake, take the time to watch the cats play and run around. Casanova and Noel are two ginger brothers who particularly like to chase each other and jump on one another at any given chance whilst Ivy and Aya will be found sleeping away the day.

Cat cafés been on the receiving end of criticism lately from animal welfare organisations such as RSPCA and Cats Protection as the café environment is not always suitable for all cats. However, the cats at You & Meow seem incredibly happy in their environment and seem to get along with each other perfectly well. The management do however recognise when a cat is not suited to this type of surrounding and help to find those who do not adjust well to find their new homes – so you can be certain that all the kitties you meet are happy as can be. There are a few rules that you are advised to follow to ensure that the cats stay happy and to help you avoid any scratches. Don’t wake any sleeping cats, pull their tails, feed them your food and drink or use flash photography.

If you’re in need of some relaxation and a fan of enjoying tea and cake whilst playing with a furry companion, You & Meow is the place to go. You will definitely leave wanting to go and find your own furry friend to keep at home.

You & Meow can be found at 22 Denmark Street. A 60-minute session is £5 per person or £3 for children but please be aware that only children over the age of 10 are permitted. You are advised to pre-book online and food and drink can be purchased at an additional cost on the day.
